I like to do marathons but shirk high mileage. Is that wise? Most amateur marathoners have a weekly mileage of 40 to 60 km which they ramp up when training for a marathon. Generally this is good enough unless your goals are more ambitious but there is always the fear of injuries as your own anecdotal research would have demonstrated this linkage.
